Product Application

What is a soft silicone gel?

Silicones are compounds with long inorganic chains which alternate atoms of silicon and oxygen, with organic groups attached to the silicon atoms.
The degree of cross-linking (quantity of links between chains) determines the physical form of the silicone, from thin oils to relatively hard rubbers.

Silicone gel is a solid silicone which is soft and tacky. As silicone gel is hydrophobic it can adhere to dry surfaces.

Why using soft silicone?

The main asset of silicone gels is their hydrophobic nature: silicone gels adhere softly to dry skin and not to the wound bed.

This soft adhesion is painless for the patient and the non-adhesion on the wound bed limits the risk of damage.
The management of pain is particularly important for long term treatments, fragile skins and frequent users.
Silicones are chemically inert and do not interact with the wound during the healing process.
They limit epidermal reactions significantly compared with acrylics.
Silicones are insoluble in exudates due to the size of their polymers: silicones cannot penetrate cell membranes or pass through the skin to reach blood vessels.
